Equally at home on operatic, concert, and recital stages, baritone John Allen enthralls audiences with his “absolutely gripping performance[s]" and "almost supernatural” voice [Rigoletto '21, The Daily Utah Chronicle] . Hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, John came to singing from a successful career as a violinist, and performs internationally in both capacities. His 2023-24 season includes recitals in Salt Lake City and Berlin, appearing as the Count in Berlin Opera Academy’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro, and as part of Lee Mingwei’s famous performance art installation Sonic Blossom at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.
Operatic engagements have included Gianni Schicchi, Germont, Rigoletto, Enrico, Leporello, Scarpia, and Sweeney Todd. Featured soloist with Utah Opera, Lyrical Opera Theater, Opera Contempo, Salt Lake Symphony, Southwest Symphony, American West Symphony, Utah Valley Symphony, Paradigm Chamber Orchestra, Sound of Ages, Cathedral of the Madeleine, and Park City Chamber Music Festival. John has also performed at Carnegie Hall, Benjamin Britton's Snape Maltings Concert Hall, the Salt Lake City Tabernacle, and the Vatican.
In addition to summer studies at Chautauqua and Aspen, John earned a Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University [Violin Performance], and recently added Master of Music [Vocal Performance] and Doctor of Musical Arts [Vocal Performance/Choral Conducting] from the University of Utah.
